IAM: Green driving saves money

Green techniques can save ten per cent on petrol. Motorists hit by rising fuel prices should adopt green driving techniques to save money, the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has stated.

According to the organisation, drivers in the UK are already using their cars less, noting a 3.4 per cent year-on-year fall in petrol sales in the third quarter of 2010.

IAM chief executive Simon Best highlighted a number of practices that could help motorists achieve savings, including anticipating the road ahead, regularly checking tyres and carrying less baggage.

He said such techniques can lead to fuel efficiency improvements of up to ten per cent.

"In other words, if the monthly price of filling up is typically two tanks at £70 each, an advanced driver can save £14 a month, or £168 a year," Mr Best commented.

Advanced driving courses can also cut the cost of insurance, the expert added.
