Potholes 'can damage tyres'

Correctly inflated tyres can save fuel. Ensuring tyres are correctly inflated can reduce the damaging effect of potholes on a car, it has been stated.

According to TyreSafe, holes in the road can cause "serious internal damage" to tyres, which can render them illegal and unsafe.

The organisation highlighted the fact that there were 8,000 pothole related insurance claims in the UK in 2010 - a figure which could rise due to freezing temperatures so far in 2011.

Stuart Jackson, TyreSafe chairman, said that motorists should be sure to check their tyres at least once a month.

"If they do suffer the misfortune of hitting a pothole, drivers should make sure both their wheels and tyres are thoroughly inspected by a professional for signs of damage," Mr Jackson added.

TyreSafe also stated the importance of correctly inflated tyres to fuel economy, particularly in light of the rise in fuel duty due to come into force in April. ADNFCR-3205-ID-800388507-ADNFCR
