Tyre experts issue cold snap warning

Drivers issued winter tyre warning British drivers have been warned that their tyres could be severely affected by the expected drop in temperature.

Many regions are now experiencing sub-zero conditions and snow is expected in many areas, news which could tempt a number of motorists to upgrade to specialist winter tyres.

Retailer Delticom, which operates the MyTyres website, has warned that once the mercury dips below seven degrees Celsius, summer tyre performance can be severely affected.

Summer tyres are usually fitted as standard on UK cars and an upgrade could ensure that drivers are safer behind the wheel on cold and icy roads.

According to Delticom's latest research, the majority of UK drivers are not aware of the benefits of fitting winter tyres.

"The principle benefits of fitting winter tyres, unlike summer tyres, [is that] they do not harden at low temperatures and that means they give much better grip on the road and the ability to stop in a shorter distance increasing safety on the road," the firm explained.
