Tech giant Apple are said to have recruited high-ranking engineers from Ford to work on the development of their autonomous car.

On Friday, The Guardian reported that it had obtained documents that confirmed that the Silicon Valley based company's self-driving car project is much further along than previously thought.

Via a public records act request, it was revealed that engineers from Apple's secretive Special Project group have met with officials from GoMentum Station, a high security testing ground for autonomous vehicles and enquired about testing availability there.

The autonomous car development is said to be named 'Project Titan', and the team includes a number of engineers from Ford, Tesla and Mercedes-Benz, amongst others.

Rumours of an Apple car go back as far as 2007, and it was known to be a desire of the late company boss, Steve Jobs. Apple chiefs visited BMW's factory in Leipzig early this year, although the outcome of this visit was not made public.
