Vauxhall Astra records five-star Euro NCAP safety rating

The new Vauxhall Astra has been awarded the maximum five stars by Euro NCAP, it has been announced.

It achieved a high rating in each of the categories assessed adult occupant protection, child occupant protection, pedestrian protection and safety assist.

The Astra's interior is designed to create the largest possible survival area in crash conditions. To allow for the impact force in the event of a crash, the front, sides and rear of the passenger compartment are surrounded by energy absorption zones that deform and protect in a controlled manner.

The cabin also features a three-part airbag system, consisting of front airbags for driver and co-driver, thorax-pelvis side airbags and full-length curtain airbags for the first and second rows of seats.

Vauxhall has fitted a variety of safety systems to the new car, such as the Lane Departure Warning with Lane Keep Assist. This both warns the driver, and applies a gentle nudge of corrective steering, if the Astra should stray from its motorway lane.

Meanwhile, Frontal Collision Alert and Following Distance Indication can be used to avoid or mitigate a frontal collision. A row of flashing red LED lights are projected onto the windscreen if the distance to the vehicle in front gets too small and a collision is imminent.

The Astra also boasts Side Blind Spot Alert. This uses ultrasonic sensors to warn of any hidden dangers when changing lanes, overtaking or navigating corners.
