On a Motability lease, what is a named driver?
A named driver is authorised to drive your Motability vehicle if you can’t yourself.
A family member perhaps or a carer or trusted friend are usual choices. You can have up to three named drivers on your vehicle at a time. If you should need to alter your named drivers you can do so with ease on your Motability account online.
Can anyone be added as a named driver?
While in other insurance coverage, if a driver is fully comp, then they can drive your car – with permission of course. Motability insurance is different.
Any named drivers on your vehicle need to be approved by Direct Line Motability (DLM). They have the following rules on who can drive your Motability vehicle.
Drivers under the age of 25 can drive the following: a petrol, diesel, or hybrid car, with an ABI insurance group of 16 or under only. The car must be limited to a maximum power output of 120bhp.
Drivers under the age of 25 can drive electric vehicles, provided they produce 140bhp or less. They must sit within the ABI insurance group of 21 or below.
Your named driver list must contain only one driver under the age of 21. This can either be the disabled person themselves or another driver living with them. Not both.
Learning to drive in a Motability vehicle on a provisional license is allowed. As long as the learner driver is accompanied by a legal driver over the age of 25. Further specifications are detailed here.
All drivers must have a legally valid driving licence. Any non-UK licences will require extra checks from Motability themselves.
Drivers with any previous convictions within the last five years cannot be added as a named driver to your vehicle.
The Motability vehicle is for the primary benefit of the disabled person. As a result, the Motability Scheme is tailored around this purpose.
For this reason, if your named drivers live away from your home, Motability may fit a location tracker to the vehicle. This is to ensure the vehicle is not being used outside of your needs. If it is, a Motability specialist will contact and inform you.

Who are my named drivers on an open insurance policy?
It allows you to give more people permission to use the car to your benefit. All without switching and changing named drivers on your Motability online account.
If you rely on multiple caregivers, it allows them to use the vehicle to assist you. If you live in a care home, school or require round-the-clock assistance it is particularly useful.
You may need multiple people to have the use of your Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV). An open insurance policy is ideal for this. Learn more on the Motability site.
I need to make a change to my named drivers
Don’t worry. Changes to your named drivers can be made at any time, directly from your Motability online account. In a few easy steps you can start the process:
- Log in to your account.
- Navigate to the insurance tab and you’ll find yourself in the DLM insurance portal.
- Now make your changes! Add, remove, or edit as needed.

I need to add a temporary driver to my Motability account
This is easily done. You follow the same procedure as adding a named driver onto your Motability vehicle. Temporary drivers can be added to your vehicle for a maximum of 30 days.
Please bear in mind you will need to remove one of the three named drivers from your account, as a temporary driver will need to fill one of the three slots. If you find you need the assistance of this person on a more frequent basis, it would be worth considering adding them as a permanent named driver.
If you haven’t got three named drivers registered to your vehicle, the temporary driver will fill one of these spaces.
