Ten Second Review
The Ford Focus didn't feel as if it needed to much remedial work done, but the latest updates give it a better-looking face, a more user-friendly interior, more efficient engines and some suspension tweaks that aim to remind us what made the Focus great in the first place.
Every once in a while, a car is launched that instantly makes all of its rivals look stupid and old. Ford pulled that particular trick back in 1998, when it launched the Mk 1 Focus. The way it drove was a revelation. Volkswagen had launched its fourth generation Golf the year before and realised that compared to the lithe Focus, here was a car that rode and handled like a supermarket trolley with a caster on the fritz. Volkswagen promptly hired many of the staff who designed the Focus suspension and put a barely disguised copy under its fifth generation car in 2004. Since then, Ford launched a second generation Focus in 2005 and a third generation car in 2011. Revenge must have felt sweet for Volkswagen when it launched the Golf Mk 7 in 2013, for here was a car that turned the tables on the Ford, offering sharper dynamics and a classier interior. Ford's response? You're looking at it here - and you'll be able to drive it before the year is out.
As this car has developed, it's become progressively bigger and heavier. We still get into this Ford and expect it to be brilliant, but if you put someone who'd never driven a Focus before in a third generation post-2011 car, chances are they'd wonder what all the fuss was about. It wasn't that the Focus had lost its touch, it's just that the rest of the market had closed the gap and in some cases overtaken the Ford in terms of driving pleasure. The latest model aims to rectify that with a series of suspension updates. The biggest change is the uprated dampers, but Ford have also fitted firmer bushings, reprogrammed the stability control to be more progressive and revised the electro-hydraulic steering. We've yet to get our hands on the finished result but Ford promises that the net result in this improved model is a car that's quicker to react, yet more stable when thrown into extreme manoeuvres, like an emergency lane change. Paddle-shift controls will be available as an option with all automatic and twin-clutch PowerShift transmissions, both diesel and petrol. Focus customers also enjoy a quieter ride, achieved by thicker carpets, thicker side window glass, and improved engine bay insulation. The engine range has also been revised. The Focus petrol engine line-up now largely hinges around an efficient 1.5-litre EcoBoost unit available in either 150 or 180PS outputs. Buyers can though, continue to opt for the 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol powerplant in 100 and 120PS guises that was chosen by a third of customers in the pre-facelift model - and a sub-100g/km version has also been developed. Diesel drivers are catered for with a 1.5-litre TDCi powerplant available in 95 or 120PS outputs. The hot ST version should build on the brilliance of its junior sibling, the livewire Fiesta ST.
Design and Build
Midlife facelifts are usually a tough thing to bring off. Just as customers have grown accustomed to the styling of the existing car, it changes. These updates are usually scheduled well in advance, often at three years into a typical seven-year life span - and that's exactly what we have here with this Focus. Thing is, it looks really good, especially the front end which wears that Aston Martin lookalike front grille so much more elegantly than the somewhat pan-faced Fiesta. The interior has also been given a serious once-over. The fascia design is more intuitive, that button-strewn centre stack and steering wheel being tidied up considerably. The black satin trim and chrome detailing contribute to a cleaner aesthetic too. Many of the controls are now marshalled by the SYNC 2 high-resolution, 8-inch colour touch screen system. This includes voice control for 'easier' access to audio, navigation, climate control and compatible mobile phones. We'll reserve judgment on that one. One thing that's undoubtedly an improvement is practicality. The centre storage console offers more space as well as a new sliding, integrated armrest, accommodating a variety of bottles and cups with the capacity to simultaneously hold a litre water bottle and a 400ml cup.
Market and Model
Prices start at around £14,000 with a trim line-up starting with 'Studio', then ranging up through 'Style' and 'Zetec' to 'Zetec S'. 'Titanium' and 'Titanium X'. The latest Focus ushers in a whole raft of new (to this model at least) technology. The Perpendicular Parking system is a development of the old Active Park Assist to guide the car into a parallel parking manoeuvre, but the addition of extra sensors now opens up features like Cross Traffic Alert, which warns drivers reversing out of a parking space of vehicles that may soon be crossing behind them. Ford also has improved its popular Active City Stop collision avoidance system, which pre-charges the brakes and - if the driver still does not respond - reduces engine torque and automatically applies the brakes to reduce the impact of collisions. It has been enhanced to operate at speeds of up to 31mph, compared to 18mph with the old version. The existing Adaptive Cruise Control is now bolstered with a Distance Alert and Indication function. Even with the cruise set to 'off', drivers can set a preferred distance they would like to maintain with the vehicle ahead. Should the driver get any closer, the system issues a three-stage dashboard display warning - from grey to yellow to red - before a chime is sounded. The Adaptive Front Lighting System now adjusts the beams of the new Bi-Xenon HID headlamps to better suit the road layout. At high speeds, such as on a motorway, the headlights are raised to project a longer, straighter beam for visibility further ahead; in towns where speeds are lower and street lighting more intense, the beam broadens downwards to more intensely illuminate the road immediately ahead. When cornering at lower speeds, the system will project a beam towards the side of the road to make cyclists and pedestrians more visible. Drivers cornering at higher speeds will see light directed further into the bend.
Cost of Ownership
Ford's old engines did a great job of sending the Focus up the road, so the massive investment in new powerplant technology has been sunk in order to improve efficiency. To that end, the most-improved diesel engine realises a 19 per cent improvement in efficiency, with the best-performing petrol engine 17 per cent better than its predecessor. In fact, the 99g/km emitted by the most efficient 1.0-litre EcoBoost model makes it the first non-hybrid petrol car in Europe to dip under the 100g/km threshold. That's not bad going for a car this size. Cheap insurance and very low servicing costs are a given.
