Vauxhall Ampera drops price to qualify for government grant

The new Ampera Positiv is set to make further strides in the electric vehicle market, with Vauxhall dropping the price for the family car.

It is expected that the move will make the Ampera more accessible to the market, as the slash in price of £3,500 to a starting price of £28,750, has seen the car qualify for the £5,000 government grant for ultra-low emissions vehicles.

The top-of-the-range model has also seen a reduction in cost by £3,500, but it will not be made available for the government Plug-in Car Grant. The £30,495 vehicle will feature the Bose Energy Efficient Series sound system, which has the potential to store up to 30GB of music. Furthermore, the higher-spec Positiv model features an in-built satellite navigation system.

Showrooms and forecourts will welcome the Ampera towards the end of 2013, and provides drivers with between 25-50 miles of battery range, while a 1.4-litre petrol engine helps to push the vehicle for a further 300-plus miles.

Duncan Aldred, Vauxhall's chairman and managing director, said: “Ampera's new price position brings the cost of electric motoring much nearer to that of a conventional vehicle. It also reinforces the multi award-winning Ampera’s position as the only solution to electric vehicle ownership that can be the sole family car."
