Kicking off the 1980s, the Austin Mini Metro was released. An older brother to the earlier Mini, it was one of Britain’s most fashionable cars. No wonder it made a great first car for many new drivers!

Fun facts:

  • The 1980s saw several special edition models released in the UK. Including the Mini Designer in 1988, inspired by fashion designer Mary Quant.
  • Early in the decade, the brand reclaimed the Austin name, which was later changed to Rover in 1988.
  • Other special editions included the Mini Mayfair, Mini Sprite, Mini Ritz, Mini Flame, and Mini Rose

It may have ceased production in 2023, though the Ford Fiesta has always been and continues to remain a classic. The second generation released in 1983, known as the Mk2, was another popular choice for new drivers. It had a wide range of engines available, including diesel, wrap-around headlights, and an updated interior. The hatchback also featured a manual five-speed transmission, seen for the first time.

Fun facts:

  • The XR2 was a sportier version of the model – a decided hit for younger drivers.
  • In the 1980s, the Ford Fiesta had to compete against the Vauxhall Nova and Austin Metro.
  • When production of the second generation ended in 1989, it had sold over 4.5 million.

3. Vauxhall Nova (1983-1994)

Another go-to for new drivers was the Vauxhall Nova released in 1983. This 2WD, three-door hatchback had a petrol engine, and produced up to 45bhp. It was the first supermini attempt by General Motors, with a simple style yet high build quality. There were also diesel engines available, and a saloon variant in both two and four-door versions.

Fun facts:

  • Competitors included the Metro, Fiesta, Peugeot 205, and Renault 5.
  • The Nova would be replaced by the Vauxhall Corsa later in 1993.
  • Annual road tax for the Nova was around £200.

4. Peugeot 205 (1983-1999)

Originally launched in 1977, the Peugeot 205 was built on the 104 platform. Its compact, angular shape and delicate proportions made it fun to drive and undeniably stylish. It was designed by Gerard Welter, with the interior design by Paul Bracq featuring a dashboard alterable by trim. The 1983 1.1 GL had a radio, adjustable seats, and a two-tone dashboard.

That’s right. Another Ford model was dominating the new driver market in the 1980s, in the form of the Escort. This compact, two-door coupe was available in various body styles, with FWD.
