The Motoring Mistakes That Could Cost You This Winter

The Motoring Mistakes That Could Cost You This Winter

Winter driving can be a challenge at the best of times. However, many drivers are unaware of an important Highway Code rule that could result in a £1,000 fine if not correctly followed.

Most new cars (manufactured after 2011) come fitted with automatic daytime running lights (DRLs), which turn on when you start your car up. However, drivers must remember that they are required by law to switch on their brighter lights (dipped headlights and brighter rear lights) when necessary.

Failing to switch on these lights when required could result in a fine of up to £1,000. Not using your dipped headlights and brighter rear lights when needed will not only give you a poorer view of the road ahead but will also make you less visible to other road users.

This Highway Code rule is especially important in the winter months as the days draw in and visibility becomes poorer due to harsh weather conditions.

There are several other Highway Code rules that you will need to be particularly aware of this winter to avoid unsafe driving – and a fine. Continue reading to find out more.

Vehicle Lights

If the bulbs in your headlights or brake lights stop working, you must get them fixed as soon as possible. If you are caught driving without working lights, you could receive a fine of £100 and three points on your licence.

Ensure you’re set for the road ahead with quality car headlights.

Vehicle Headlights

Tyres

The legal minimum tread depth for cars is 1.6mm - however it is recommended that you change your tyres long before they reach this level. Make sure you keep an eye on them to stay safe on the roads.

You should also check that your tyre pressures meet the recommended guidelines set by your vehicle manufacturer. If your tyres are over or under- inflated it can be a serious safety hazard, affecting handling, grip, and braking distance. Fines for incorrectly inflated tyres can be as much as £2,500 and three penalty points per tyre. Find the correct tyre pressures for your car in your vehicle handbook - and use a pressure gauge to check the measurements.

Clearing Frost and Mist

Driving with snow, ice, or frost on your windscreen, or with your windscreen steamed up will massively impact your visibility. Drivers caught doing so will be deemed as ‘using a vehicle in a dangerous condition’ which carries a £2,500 fine and three penalty points.

Snowy Windscreen

Make sure you clear any frost from your windscreen using de-icer and a scraper before you hit the roads. If your windscreen mists up while you are driving, turn on the heating, slowly increase the temperature, and then swich to air con mode – this will remove excess moisture in the air. Your windows should soon begin to de-mist and give you a clearer view ahead.

Windscreen Check

If you are driving with a cracked windscreen, it can seriously impact your vision. You should ensure that it is in perfect condition, as even a small chip can quickly turn into a large crack.

Cracked Windscreen

Additionally, if your wiper blades are worn or damaged they are unsuitable for use – especially with winter weather requiring their use more often. If you are caught driving with a damaged windscreen or damaged windscreen wipers, you could face a £2,500 fine and three points on your licence – for each offence.

Make sure you are set for the season with quality wiper blades for your car.
