The latest Auto Express awards have highlighted the qualities of a number of new cars available in the UK with the Vauxhall Ampera, Mazda CX-5 and Ford Focus St among this year's winners.

Ampera, Vauxhall's innovative new electric motor, has already bagged a host of industry accolades and now lays claim to the Auto Express Magazine Green Award 2012.

Meanwhile, the Mazda CX-5 beat off stiff competition from a host of rivals to bag the coveted Best Crossover gong.

However, one award that always attracts a great deal of attention at the Auto Express New Car Awards is the Best Hot Hatch category.

This year the honour was awarded to the all-new 250PS Ford Focus ST.

The Blue Oval welcomed the win, which comes despite the model currently being in only its first month of general release in the UK.

Mark Ovenden, Ford Britain managing director, said: "Ford's medium car range is all new, with new Focus and C-MAX models launched last year and the next version of the Ford Kuga just around the corner.

"Auto Express recognising the appeal of our latest Focus sports model, as well as C-MAX, is a terrific endorsement of our products, technology and expertise."

Steve Fowler, editor-in-chief at Auto Express, said of the new Focus ST that not only does it have the performance figures to back up its looks, but it also comes with a "price to please".

The awards ceremony was a double success for Ford after the C-Max picked up the prize for Best Five-Seat MPV.

According to Auto Express, the C-MAX accounts for 18.5 per cent of its segment's sales.

"With the Ford C-MAX, you expect a Ford to be good to drive and you’d be right here too.  But the C-MAX is also practical and good value," Mr Fowler.
