Doncaster Secure Braford Tie With Bristol Street Motors Trophy Success

Doncaster Rovers made light of their position in the lower reaches of League Two to secure a place in the quarter finals of the Bristol Street Motors Trophy with victory over Wigan Athletic.

Doncaster went into the game having lost two games in a row in the league, whilst Wigan had drawn two in a row in League One – either side of an FA Cup defeat to Manchester United.

Wigan started the game stronger and after good work down the right hand side freed up space for Sean Clare, he whipped in a dangerous cross that was headed home by Charlie Wyke for the opening goal.

Both sides had chances to score before half-time but after the break it was the home side who battled back – scoring a near carbon copy goal to equalise as Owen Bailey headed in a cross from the right hand side from Luke Molyneux.

Wigan had a late chance to win the game only for Louis Jones to deny Jordan Jones with a smart save as the game went to penalties.

A miss from Charlie Hughes gave the advantage to Doncaster but there was a scare for Rovers when Ben Amos came within inches of keeping out Kyle Hurst’s effort as it squirmed under his body.

It means Jordan Jones had to score to keep the tie alive but his namesake dived to his right to palm the ball away and put Doncaster through to a tie against Bradford City.
