Driving in the dark: Motorists prepare for the earlier British nights

With people across the UK getting prepared to enjoy an extra hour in bed on Sunday, drivers are also getting ready to change their driving habits as the roads become darker.

As the clocks are set to go back on Sunday, Britain's top advanced driver Peter Rodger has given out advice on safe practice when driving in the dark.

The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) chief examiner has advised drivers to improve their view as much as possible, by ensuring both their lights and windscreen are clean - including the inside of the windows as much as possible.

While he advised drivers to use their main beam on unlit roads, he reminded them to dim this when other motorists are approaching.

It is also advised to take particular care when doing standard vehicle checks, including testing the tyre tread depth, the brakes and ensuring you have emergency supplies in the boot in the event of a breakdown - such as a high-visibility jacket, reflective warning signs and a blanket.

Mr Rodger reiterated that the risk of collisions will increase as visibility becomes more and more minimal, so drivers should be extra careful when out on the road.
