Fiat wins engine award

The engine and transmission production division at Fiat has taken an industry award for the second year running.

Fiat Powertrain Technologies was given the international Technobest prize for its new TwinAir twin-cylinder engine, having also won it in 2009 for its MultiAir technology.

The accolade was awarded by a group of independent Autobest judges from 14 European countries.

Judges particularly commended the TwinAir for its technical innovation and downsizing, achieved through MultiAir electro-hydraulic control of engine inlet valves.

The 85hp turbo version of the engine made its debut at the Geneva International Motor Show earlier this year.

Fiat states: "Because of its extremely small size, the new TwinAir engine is ideally suited to being coupled with an electric engine, producing a hybrid propulsion unit that is particularly suitable for use in towns."

Last month, the Fiat Doblo came out on top in the '£16,000 to £20,000' class at the Caravan Club Towcar of the Year 2011 awards.
