IAM: Take it easy when driving on icy roads

The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has published a list of safety precautions in order to ensure that drivers are safe when out on the roads this winter.

Drivers have been urged to ensure they have all-round visibility before setting off and to take time clearing snow off the roof of their cars.

Speed is also a key safety factor, and drivers should aim to reach a balanced speed to ensure they do not lose control but always have enough momentum.

The organisation also warned drivers not to go against police warnings, even on roads they know well.

IAM chief examiner Peter Rodger said: "Avoid travelling unless completely necessary, and don't ignore police warnings or advice to not travel on specific routes. Can you work remotely, or change your schedule?"

Drivers have also been urged to purchase special winter tyres in recent weeks, with a number of car makers launching winter car package deals.
