What Car? announces Supermini hopefuls

The Supermini category at this year's What Car? Car of the Year Awards looks set to be hotly contested.

A number of hugely-popular models have been added to the shortlist and will battle to wrestle the crown from last year's winner, the Audi A1.

This year sees the Chevrolet Aveo, Ford Fiesta, Hyundai i20 and Renault Clio among a clutch of motors hoping to win the coveted industry accolade.

However, these models will also face competition from the Volkswagen Polo and the Kia Rio.

The annual event can provide a boost for sales of the winning models and those keen on reducing their carbon footprint will pay particular interest to the Low Carbon Award.

This category sees Alfa Romeo nominated for its significant improvement in CO2 emissions, while Fiat is shortlisted for offering the lowest Co2 range.

However, after another solid year, the Nissan Leaf, which scooped the title in 2010, will be hard to beat.
