While few drivers want to admit it, there comes a time when they must turn their back on the hot hatch market in favour of a more "sensible" model to accommodate their growing family.

However, the step needn't be daunting as there are a number of superb small family cars currently available.

Industry publication What Car? has listed what it believes to be the best ten on the market, with models to appeal to everyone from the keenest petrolhead to the eco-conscious driver.

The Alfa Romeo Giulietta and Volkswagen Jetta are also mentioned as suitable vehicle soultions for those looking to upgrade thier cars.

In seventh place the Mazda3 is described by the publication as "a fresh and funky approach in an otherwise conservative market", backing up its "snazzy looks with a sporty drive".

For a car with green credentials, What Car? recommends the Nissan Leaf in sixth, while the fifth-placed Hyundai i30 is picked for its "outstanding warranty package".

The Ford Focus earns the bronze medal ahead of the Toyota Prius and is described as "a superbly rounded family hatchback that's well specified, competitively priced and great to drive".

Topping the list is the Volkswagen Golf, which beat off competition from the Skoda Octavia for first place.
