French car giant Peugeot has promised its fans that the 2013 208 GTI will incorporate the spirit of the beloved 205 GTI.

Although the vehicle has yet to be formally unveiled, Peugeot's managing director Tim Zimmerman has lifted the lid on exactly what drivers can expect.

To begin with, Mr Zimmerman underlined that the car will "recapture the spirit of the 205 GTI".

"The 205 GTI was raw, almost like a sports car. Things can never be exactly the same but we believe the new car gives plenty to the fan of the 205 GTI," he pointed out.

In order to ensure that the new Peugeot 208 GTI appeals to those who have a special place in their hearts for the 205 GTI, the former vehicle will receive development testing in the UK.

Another appealing aspect of the 208 GTI is that Peugeot has assured motorists that it will be lighter than the 207 model it is replacing.

Mr Zimmerman acknowledged: "For most makers, each new generation of car is heavier than the last. We have reversed that with 208."

The new Peugeot 208 GTI is set to launch in the UK sometime during 2013.
