Drivers 'should check tyres before Easter journeys'

Motorists should ensure they check their tyres before heading off on a long journey for Easter weekend, it has been urged.

According to TyreSafe, assessing tyres and wheels before setting off can avoid unnecessary expense and long periods waiting by the side of the road.

TyreSafe chairman Stuart Jackson predicted that the UK's roads will be particularly busy next week and observed that many vehicles will be packed full of passengers and luggage.

"This added weight makes it particularly important that drivers check their tyre pressure, condition and tread depth before setting out. It will only take a few minutes but could help to prevent a ruined weekend," Mr Jackson commented.

Motorists should check the pressure of their tyres against specific levels provided by their vehicle manufacturer, he added.

Overloaded or under-inflated tyres can lead to wasted fuel and present dangers to drivers, particularly during motorway travel, TyreSafe also noted.
