The much-anticipated Ford Focus RS could be set to break from cover in 2016, as the US manufacturer has given the biggest hint yet that the car could become a reality.

Images have emerged that show how the Focus will be transformed from a family hatchback to one of the fastest front-wheel drive cars on the market.

Barb Samardzich, speaking to Auto Express at a recent Ford event in Milan, said there is a "strong desire" to build the car, which will become a "great halo car".

This opinion was later corroborated by a Ford spokesperson, who told the magazine: “We have a rich heritage of RS cars, and we’re not about to let any competitors overtake us in that respect."

Ford has yet to release any more detail on the Focus RS, but the rumour mill is already cracking into top gear, with suggestions indicating a 2.3-litre EcoBoost four-cylinder engine could be under the bonnet.

The new RS model, which looks set for a 2016 debut, is also slated to make use of the company's Revoknuckle front suspension. The technology has been designed and created specifically for high-performance front-wheel drive vehicles
