The B-MAX was named the Best Multi-Purpose Vehicle, beating off competition from the same manufacturer's C-MAX. The Fiesta, which is the best-selling car in the UK, meanwhile won the Best Small Car prize.

The Ford Mondeo, S-MAX and Focus Estate were all given recognition during the awards, with judges commending them in their relevant categories.

"From the moment you get behind the wheel of a Fiesta, you just know that Ford's engineers have got this car spot on," said Ian Robertson, Diesel Car editor.

He added that the B-MAX is "friendly and fun, clever and capable", providing excellent economy and an impressive performance.

"We are delighted to have received this independent endorsement from Diesel Car Magazine," said Mark Ovenden, Ford of Britain chairman and managing director, adding that it is a very exciting time for the company's small car range.

The Ford Fiesta and B-MAX are available from dealerships at £9,995 and £12,995 on-the-road, respectively.
