Renault celebrates record sales in 2011

Renault is in the mood for celebration after seeing 2011 topple its sales records.

According to the firms latest figures, it shifted an impressive 2.72 million vehicles worldwide last year - a rise of 3.6 per cent.

Passenger cars like the popular Clio and Megane, as well as light commercial vehicles, were strong performers for the marquee, helping it to cement its place as the number two firm in Europe for these sectors.

Commenting on these results, Jerome Stoll, executive vice-president of sales and marketing and LCVs at Renault, said: "In 2011, the Renault group beat its own record, selling 2.7 million vehicles, and pursued its global expansion, generating 43 per cent of its sales outside Europe.

"Despite mixed results in Europe, Renault remains the market's number two brand and was the LCV leader for the 14th year in a row."

The news comes shortly after the carmaker announced plans to bring back the Renault 5, a move which could see the firm rival the Fiat 500 and MINI Cooper in the nostalgia stakes.
