Renault to launch efficient new 1.6-litre engine

Renault has revealed an all-new engine that it will add to its current line-up, the 1.6-litre Energy dCI 160 Twin Turbo.

According to the manufacturer, it delivers the feel of a two-litre engine yet also brings a comparative fuel saving of 25 per cent.

It has taken all its experience in F1 engine design to develop this latest model, creating an engine that is not only efficient, but that also offers greater driving enjoyment.

The engine is the first example of a diesel model that benefits from twin-turbocharging, with the 1,598cc block delivering 160hp and 380Nm or torque.

This twin-turbo design helps to ensure a blend of low-end torque and high power at higher revs. The system comprises two sequential turbo compressors, with the first a very low inertia turbo providing the high low-end torque for crisp pull-away and mid-range acceleration. The second produces the high power (100hp per litre) to ensure smooth and dependable acceleration.

With the efficiency it provides, the engine will be more than capable of powering larger vehicles and is therefore expected to be made available in Renault's future D- and E-segment models.
