Top five clean, green, all-electric cars

The electric car market is becoming more innovative, adventurous, accessible and vital, with nearly all manufacturers realising the need to turn green.

There are a number of fantastic electric cars to choose from on the market, all offering a number of benefits for day-to-day drivers.

We take a look at the five best models currently available.

Nissan Leaf

One of the most recognisable electric cars around is the Nissan Leaf, with the latest edition of the vehicle offering more range and equipment than ever before.

On a single charge, the car can travel up to 124 miles and achieve speeds as fast as 90 mph.

There are charge points popping up all over the country to top-up your power on the go, with a 30-minute charge taking power from 0 to 80 per cent. Of course, it is also easily chargeable from home.

The latest model is available with a large colour touchscreen, allowing easy access to satellite navigation and other in-car entertainment systems.

Renault Twizy

A slightly unconventional addition to the top five is the Renault Twizy. This city mobility vehicle is a two-seater machine that is perfect for simple and efficient travel in the most built-up areas.

The Twizy Urban, for example, offers a maximum speed of 50 mph and a full charge time of just three and a half hours.

With an automatic gearbox, the Twizy is super simple to drive and is perfect for any busy area.

Volkswagen e-up!

The e-up! is Volkswagen's first full release of an entirely electric powered vehicle, with the e-Golf following hot on its trail.

This machine can go from 0 to 60 mph in 12.4 seconds with the 82 PS BEV engine, with a top speed of 80 mph.

It can be fitted with parking sensors, heated windscreen and electric windows, while customers can benefit from the RCD 215 radio/MP3 compatible CD player with DAB radio.

Ford Focus Electric

Powered by a lithium-ion battery alone, the Focus Electric is able to deliver up to 100 miles on a single charge.

It offers a clean and quiet ride, with a single-speed transmission ensuring that power is instantaneous as the foot presses on the pedal.

As with all new Fords it is equipped with the manufacturer's impressive SYNC system, bringing in-car entertainment and a host of driver assist features.

Citroen C-Zero

Perfect for short but essential day-to-day outings, the Citroen C-Zero offers a range of 93 miles on a single charge, with a top speed of 80 mph.

In addition to the power from the on-board battery, power is generated through energy recovery when decelerating, providing a little extra charge.

With a stunning interior and 166 litres of loading space, it's an exceptional electric family car.
