Hot hatch lovers now have a tough choice on their hands, as Vauxhall has launched the Astra GTC, which undercuts the new VW Scirocco by £1,100.

With prices starting at under £18,500, younger drivers looking for a sporty upgrade will surely be tempted by the GTC's sophisticated high-performance suspension and perky 2.0-litre engine, which produces 163bhp.

The design is supposed to look like it's been "plucked from the class above", Vauxhall says, and the muscular bulges on the bonnet and wheel arches are certainly eye-catching.

There is a choice of four engines, but Autocar claims that the 2.0-litre diesel set up will provide the best all-round experience, with 57.6mpg offered as well as 0-62mph in 8.9 seconds.

Those looking forward to the fully souped-up Vauxhall Astra VXR will have to wait until next year, but reports suggest that this version will pack more than 300bhp.
