Everything You Need To Know About Electric Vehicles on the Motability Scheme

Thinking about leasing an electric car for your next Motability vehicle? In this article, we’ll run through everything you need to know.

  • Electric vehicles are a great way to drive more responsibly, reducing if not eliminating tailpipe emissions.
  • They are also known to offer an easier driving experience with automatic transmission and are much smoother to drive.
  • Electric vehicles (EVs) are often more expensive to purchase outright than a normal petrol or diesel car. Using your Motability allowance, you can exchange your New Vehicle Payment to help cover the costs.

Due to renew your Motability lease? You might be thinking about making a change. If so, an electric vehicle could be the perfect choice.

Offering a range of benefits, EVs not only make the perfect efficient car but also the perfect Motability car. Read on to learn why you should choose an electric car for your next lease.

Reasons to choose an electric vehicle for your Motability car

Electric vehicles (EVs) run solely on electric power. The system normally pairs a battery with an electric motor that helps turn the wheels of the car.

There are several benefits afforded to EV drivers, including:

  • Zero road tax for fully electric vehicles (reduced for hybrids)
  • Congestion zone charge exemptions
  • A smoother driving experience with instant power
  • Automatic transmission, removing the need for changing gears
  • Lower maintenance costs compared to petrol or diesel cars

With a wide range of vehicles from top manufacturers, there’s plenty of choice for everyone. Most EVs also provide between 100 – 300 miles of range, making them practical for both city driving and longer trips.

Thanks to the Motability Scheme, they’re also more affordable. You can exchange your Mobility allowance to cover the costs of leasing one.

What’s included with Motability when you choose an EV?

When you lease an electric car through Motability, you get to enjoy several benefits thanks to the Scheme’s worry-free package. These include:

  • Insurance through Direct Line Motability (DLM)
  • Road tax (unless you choose to pay this yourself)
  • MOTs and servicing all taken care of (including any routine repairs)
  • Breakdown cover through RAC Motability Assist
  • Costs and installation of a home chargepoint (or access to a bp pulse network if this is not possible)
  • Adaptations or modifications at no extra cost (provided these are specified at the start)
  • Personal accident cover up to £5,000
  • Replacement locks in the event your keys are stolen
  • A temporary replacement if your car is not drivable following an incident

So, not only do you get to lease a brand new car every few years with the latest technology. But you also won’t need to worry about any of the finer details like insurance, road tax, and servicing. All paperwork will be taken care of for you!

Charging your electric Motability vehicle

Person about to plug in their electric car to recharge

If you’ve never driven an electric car before, it can be quite a change. Since they don’t have an engine that requires refuelling, they will need plugging into a power source to recharge.

Thankfully, the process is incredibly easy. You’ll be provided with a charging cable which you can use to plug your vehicle in via either a three-pin plug or a wall-mounted charging box.

Depending on the make and model, charging times may vary. Home charging is better for a full overnight charge as this can take around 7-11 hours. DC charging is better for a quick charge, giving you a boost within the hour in most cases.

On the go, you’ll find plenty of rapid public charging points, which generally offer a 10-80% charge in just 30 minutes or so. This is perfect for when you’re on the go, meaning you’ll never have to worry about running out of charge.

To help you, we’ve even put together a guide to charging your electric vehicle away from home. So you can make the most of every journey in your electric Motability car.
