Motorists 'should drive carefully after rain'

Drivers should be careful on the roads following heavy rainfall across parts of the UK, it has been urged.

According to roadside rescue company Mondial Assistance UK, road surfaces may be more slippery than motorists expect since the weather has so far been dry this summer.

The firm advises car owners to check the condition of their tyres before getting behind the wheel, while worn-out windscreen wipers and brakes should also be checked.

Lee Taylor, automotive sales director at Mondial Assistance UK, stated that drivers should exercise caution on the roads, since the first heavy rainfall for weeks will lead to a slippery surface caused by a build up of oil and other greasy substances.

"[Wet conditions] can dramatically impact people's ability to drive and also affect braking distances and vehicle handling, leading to a much higher risk of accidents," Mr Taylor said.

UK law states that tyres must be inflated to the vehicle manufacturer's specification and have a tread depth of at least 1mm across 75 per cent of their breadth. ADNFCR-3205-ID-800020800-ADNFCR
