'Thousands of new cars registered under scrappage scheme'

The scrappage scheme was successful in ridding the roads of thousands of old bangers and replacing them with greener vehicles, figures have shown.

According to findings by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), 388,540 new cars were registered through the initiative by the end of April.

The scheme accounted for about eight per cent of all new car registrations last month, with the models having an average 27 per cent less CO2 output each than the vehicles they replaced.

SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt commented: "The scheme helped support our economy and played a vital role in providing a much-needed boost to the UK automotive industry."

He added that the latest estimations show 2010 could be a better than expected year than previously thought but is unlikely to achieve the highs seen when the scrappage scheme was in place.

Recent findings from the society highlight that the new car market grew by 11.5 per cent last month.
