UK drivers should prepare themselves and their vehicles for cold conditions as winter closes in, it has been stated.

According to ATS Euromaster, motorists in the UK do not often need cold weather tyres since the temperature rarely drops low enough.

However, record low temperatures earlier this year caused by a spell of snow and ice have prompted the company to roll out new tyre options to its customers.

Specialist tyres are used more commonly in northern European countries such as Finland, Sweden and Estonia.

Chris Hufflett, group operations director at ATS Euromaster, said customers may be keen to acquire new tyres after last winter.

"So many were left stranded or involved in accidents - or knew people who were - that this year drivers are keen to be more prepared for the worst and able to keep their vehicles running safely," Mr Hufflett added.

ATS Euromaster's £3 million investment in cold weather tyres has attracted interest from fleet customers.

Specialist tyres are a legal requirement in a number of EU nations during the winter months, including Austria, Latvia and Germany, Etyres notes.ADNFCR-3205-ID-800108618-ADNFCR
