Hot hatch fans waiting to catch a glimpse of the eagerly-awaited new Vauxhall Astra VXR have been given a sneak peak by the firm.

Industry publication Auto Express recently spotted the car being put through its paces on a test track.

In what is a rare occurrence, the vehicle was being tested with little or no attempt made to disguise its appearance.

It is not clear if this was a mistake on Vauxhall's part or a way to spark interest in the sporty-looking model.

Auto Express seemed suitably impressed by the motor, saying it looks as though Vauxhall is ready to take its "share of the hot hatch spotlight".

"The newcomer is expected to be able to accelerate from 0-62mph in under six seconds and will then continue onwards to reach speeds of over 150mph," the magazine explained.

"[Vauxhall's new] VXR is based on the three-door GTC model but gets larger alloy wheels, a rear spoiler and more muscular body kit. There's also a set of huge cross-drilled Brembo brakes for immense stopping power.
