Hatchback lovers looking for an economical ride will surely be tempted by the new Vauxhall Astra ecoFLEX, which boasts 76.3 mpg fuel consumption.

Furthermore, this edition is the first Astra to emit less than 100g of CO2 per km, resulting in a total exemption from the London Congestion Charge and Vehicle Excise Duty.

Company car purchasers may also be interested, as the Astra ecoFLEX is included in the lowest Benefit in Kind tax band and offers 100 per cent capital allowance.

Vauxhall insists that performance has not been sacrificed in the name of economy, however, as the 1.7-litre CDTi diesel engine kicks out 128 bhp of power.

Furthermore, the new variable geometry turbocharger also provides even greater boost-pressure control for extra power when overtaking.

For a smoother ride, the six-speed gearbox has been tuned to work with the improved engine set-up, while the rev-counter suggests the best time to switch up for better fuel efficiency.

The Vauxhall Astra ecoFLEX will be available to order soon, but the carmaker has not yet set a date or prices for its general release.
