Japanese car giant Nissan has announced that the new version of its luxury Infiniti brand will solely be built in Sunderland.

The factory in the north-east of England has already had the opportunity of assembling such beloved vehicles as the Nissan Bluebird, the Nissan Primera and the Nissan Qashqai since first opening its gates in the mid-1980s.

However, a new chapter in the plant's success story was marked this week when Nissan revealed that it will invest £250 million so that the next Infiniti vehicle can be produced exclusively in Sunderland.

The strategy is set to create 280 new jobs at Nissan, as well as a further 720 fresh roles in the supply chain as the Infiniti is given a smooth transition from production line to showrooms.

Furthermore, business secretary Vince Cable hailed the move as representing "a strong endorsement of the quality of Britain's car industry, which is creating jobs, taking on apprentices and contributing to building a stronger economy".

The next-generation Nissan Infiniti, which is yet to receive an official name, will begin production in Sunderland in 2015.
