Renault joins with Orange to explore 4G potential

Renault has formed a partnership with mobile communications network Orange that will see the two trying to discover new connectivity applications in vehicles through the use of high-speed technologies.

With the anticipation that all modern vehicles will be hyper connected, Renault and Orange intend to lead the way in researching the possibilities that 4G and Long Term Evolution (LTE) systems hold in the automotive world.

If the technology is successfully implemented, drivers will be able to access personal and professional information while on the move in complete safety. Tests are now being conducted in real-life situations to see if it is viable. This could include the use of video conferencing or even cloud gaming while in the car.

The first prototype to be used will be based on the Renault Zoe and will be presented to crowds at the Le Web'13 conference.

Remi Bastien, head of engineering innovation at Renault, said: “This partnership is an example of an effective working relationship between two very different worlds. We were able to benefit ahead of time from a high-speed LTE network and from Orange’s expertise, with an opportunity to take advantage of the network for our prototype of the connected vehicle of the future.”
